Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
We are proud to offer Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), a specialised treatment approach designed to help individuals who struggle with emotional dysregulation, self-destructive behaviours, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships.
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is a highly structured and evidence-based therapy that combines elements of cognitive-behavioural therapy, mindfulness practices, and dialectical philosophy. Originally developed to treat borderline personality disorder, DBT has proven effective in addressing a wide range of mental health conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and substance abuse.
At The Psychiatry and Therapy Centre, our therapists are extensively trained and experienced in providing DBT. We are committed to helping individuals develop essential skills to regulate their emotions, tolerate distress, improve interpersonal effectiveness, and cultivate mindfulness. By learning and practicing these skills, you can gain greater control over your thoughts and behaviours, leading to improved emotional well-being and healthier relationships.
DBT is a collaborative and empowering therapy that involves both individual therapy sessions and skills training groups. In individual therapy, you will work closely with your therapist to identify and target specific problematic behaviours and thought patterns. Through a supportive and non-judgmental therapeutic relationship, your therapist will help you explore the underlying causes of your emotional difficulties and guide you towards effective strategies for change.
In skills training groups, you will learn practical skills that are essential for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness, and mindfulness. These skills are taught in a structured and systematic manner, allowing you to develop and strengthen your ability to cope with challenging situations and manage intense emotions. Skills training groups provide a supportive environment where you can learn from others and receive guidance from your therapist.
One of the core components of DBT is mindfulness, which involves being fully present and aware in the present moment. Through mindfulness practices, you will learn to observe and accept your thoughts, emotions, and sensations without judgment. This heightened awareness enables you to make conscious choices and respond to situations in a more skillful and balanced manner.
DBT also emphasises the importance of building and maintaining healthy relationships. Interpersonal effectiveness skills help you navigate social interactions, set boundaries, and communicate effectively. By improving your interpersonal skills, you can establish and maintain healthier and more satisfying relationships.
At The Psychiatry and Therapy Centre our DBT therapists are committed to providing a compassionate and supportive environment where you can feel safe to explore your challenges and work towards positive change. We understand that each individual’s journey is unique, and we tailor our DBT treatment to address your specific needs and goals.

What is the Difference Between CBT and DBT?
There are 4 main differences between CBT and DBT in Dubai.
- CBT in Dubai focusses on unhelpful thoughts and beliefs and helps you challenge them through evidence of experiences and behaviour. When negative thought patterns and behaviours change, then you feel better. DBT in Dubai on the other hand is a type of CBT. The main focus of DBT in Dubai is on emotional regulation, especially in conditions such as BPD.
- CBT uses different modalities of treatment than DBT. CBT uses techniques such as cognitive restructuring, exposure therapy, response prevention and behavioural strategies to help with conditions like depression and anxiety. DBT in Dubai uses techniques such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotional regulation and interpersonal skills. This helps to regulate strong emotions and improve relationships.
- CBT usually involves a fixed number of sessions each lasting 50-60 minutes. DBT in Dubai on the other hand involves a number of therapeutic structures including individual therapy in Dubai, skills training in groups and telephone support.
- CBT is normally targeted towards conditions such as Depression or Anxiety. Anxiety Disorders helped by CBT in Dubai include Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Social Phobia, other Phobias, Panic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) and Health Anxiety disorders. DBT in Dubai on the other hand is designed for patients who suffer with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and other disorders of emotional regulation.
What are the Basics of Dialectical Behavioural Therapy?
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is a type of psychotherapy or talk therapy for people who suffer with intense emotions. It is the therapy of choice for borderline personality disorder (BPD), however is useful for other conditions too.

Here in Dubai DBT is a special type of therapy in Dubai which only highly trained specialists can utilise. DBT in Dubai helps with a wide range of conditions such as BPD, self-harm, suicidal ideation/ behaviour, PTSD, substance misuse, eating disorders and depression/anxiety. Dialectical (the word means “way of resolving opposing ideas”) Behavioural Therapy helps patients make sense of opposing thoughts and feelings.
DBT therapy in Dubai has been proven through research to benefit patients with the conditions listed above. It helps patients with healthier ways to cope with conflicting thoughts and feelings. In a practical sense, DBT in Dubai works through a 4-stage process:
- DBT in Dubai initial assessment – this is to assess your suitability for therapy in Dubai and to explain how it works; it’s also to get consent and to prepare you for therapy in Dubai.
- Individual DBT therapy in Dubai- these are weekly 45-60 minutes sessions covering unhelpful behaviours such as self-harm.
- DBT Dubai group skills training- this is like a classroom session to learn techniques such as mindfulness, emotional regulation and tolerating distressing feelings.
- DBT Dubai telephone support- this allows an opportunity to contact your therapist in Dubai in between sessions at fixed times, for emotional crises.
What is an Example of Dialectical Behaviour?
There are many examples of dialectical behaviours that can be utilised to help patients. The following are often mentioned in DBT in Dubai:
- Distress tolerance- accepting intense emotions and working on helpful behavioural interventions such as distraction and self-soothing; instead of unhelpful ones such as deliberate self-harm.
- Emotional regulation- learning to recognize, and be aware of, intense emotions and managing these in a way which improves relationships. Managing these emotions is often done through increasing emotional resilience and decreasing emotional vulnerability through therapy in Dubai.
- Mindfulness- DBT therapy in Dubai encourages and teaches the patient to be in the present and not in the past or the future. It teaches the patient to be aware of the present in a non-judgemental way through being aware of one’s feelings and thoughts.
- Interpersonal skills- these are developed during DBT Dubai and allow the patient to set helpful and safe boundaries, to communicate their needs in a confident way, and to maintain self-respect and self-esteem.
- Taking the middle path- DBT therapy in Dubai helps patients navigate the extremes of emotions and behaviours by finding a middle path which is safe, non-judgemental and calming. It challenges the black and white thinking which is often found in DBT in Dubai.
